Set reasonable emotional expectations, remembering:

• Unrelenting happiness is an unrealistic goal.

• All human emotions are normal and acceptable.

Avoid invalidating or offensive statements.

Example Do calmly say and repeat if necessary: Don’t say

Sadness “I see you are sad.” Let the child be sad and reassure him with “You will be okay.” “Don’t be sad.”

“Don’t cry.”

“You are being silly.”

Fear “I see you are afraid.” Let the child be afraid, and teach courage with “You can be brave and I can help you.” “Take a deep breath with me so we can talk about it.” “Don’t be scared.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“You are being silly.”

Anger “I see you are mad.” Help the child to calm down with “Take a deep breath with me so we can talk about it.” “Don’t be mad.”

“I don’t like when you are mad.”

“Be a good boy/girl.
